Description of the transports available to reach the U.I.T:

To get to our U.I.T, several itineraries are available. For people living rather far from our U.I.T, the best route would be to go to the "Mairie de Montreuil" by the terminus of line 9 direction "Mairie de Montreuil" then take bus n°122 towards "Val de Fontenay" and get off at the "Nouvelle France" stop which is located just in front of the U.I.T. Otherwise a route using the RER A exists, you have to take it to the "Val de Fontenay" stop then take bus n°122 too but this time, direction "Gallieni-Metro" to the stop "Nouvelle France" as for the previous road.

For the poeple that are closer to the U.I.T, the bus n°301 drops off near "Parc Montreau" with the stop "Les Ruffins" which is less than 5min away from the I. U.T, the bus n°127 drops off in front of the Super U which is also less than 5 minutes away from the I. U.T with the "Grands Pêchers" stop.

Examples of initiatives for students proposed by the University of Paris VIII.

  • Solidarity and Development Fund for Student Initiatives (FSDIE in French)

If in this case, you are a student at the University of Paris 8 (and therefore in the IUT de Montreuil), you can get financial aid for a collective interest project

  • Student life service

In the same context as the previous point, this service improves the reception of students with information and support methods in administrative procedures and social

In addition, it allows the development in cultural life, particularly by supporting initiatives of the students and the associations.

  • Help with digital equipment

The University of Paris 8 provides a computer on loan so that certain students in situations of digital insecurity or with financial problems can benefit of computers for the pedagogical continuity.

  • The MIC Program (Outside Europe)

This international mobility, which was created in 2015, allows you to go on Erasmus outside Europe, it allows you to have financial aid including the plane ticket and an allowance of 700 € In total, 13 outgoing mobility grants are available in 2020-2021, allowing the development of international cooperation between Paris 8 University with new international partner universities.

Estimation of the digital footprint

A small percentage of the computer workforce is self-service, most are there for the IT promotion of the IUT, it has actually 732 computers.

The impact is mainly depending on the moment of day: when there is class or no, etc ... When the PCs aren't used, they still, most of the times, powered on to for the next class or students .

According to the Agency for Ecological Transition, this could represent approximately in standby use between 20% and 40% of the consumption values in Watts hours when it is in operation, they estimate a value of 20 to 100Wh for a PC in operation, therefore in standby, a computer station will consume between 4 to 40Wh, for imagined a loss on a much larger number of computer workstations, according to the Regulation (EC) n ° 1275/2008 of the commission of December 17, 2008 which concerns ecodesign requirements for electricity consumption on an annual basis due to standby functions and losses in shutdown mode were around 47TWh in 2005 and which corresponds to 19 million tons of CO² emissions

The IUT is not at this point of course, but it was just a visualization of the amount of energy that we can lose, in addition to that, we must also count the screens that are unfortunately never really shut down, according to the Ecological Transition Agency, a flat screen consumes between 10 and 30Wh in operation but in standby this can represented a consumption between 0.005 to 10Wh, so for a screen which is in standby has the IUT 24 hours a day, this could represent an amount of 240Wh, for the standby mode, during 7 days a week which represents 365 days in the year, that would represent 87 600Wh per year, for a post IT would represent 350 400Wh per year.

The advantage is that France don't emits a lot of CO² thanks to 70.6% of the energy that is produced by nuclear power plants, for a PC on standby per year, the IUT would indirectly produce 2,100 gCO2e / kWh and for a screen that corresponds to 522 gCO2e / kWh

For a normal student use, let's take an example where the student uses the computer for about 5 hours of development over a day, so, the PC would be on standby from 4 p.m. until 9 a.m. which makes 5 hours of standby before it is used and this is the same for a screen, and used from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. so 5 hours of standby, this represents 680 Wh for 17h in standby then 500Wh for 5h of use, this represents 1 180 Wh so a little closer to 6 gCO2e / kWh for one day, for 5 days per example this would represent around 36 gCO2e / kWh

For a group of 30 students for example with 30 PCs available, this could be represented an emission of 1,080 gCO2e / kWh, all these nubers in gCO2e / kWh are more or less true only if the U.I.T depends on a nuclear power plant because logically the IUT could prduce more CO2 if it depends on a coal-fired power station for example

This standby can also have harmful effects such as accelerating the obsolescence of the PCs, therefore can cause delays in student work, a delay that they will have to catch up and therefore (As with the Covid-19 crisis) and so, consume more energy to finish it on time

Now, on the lighting level consumption of the IUT, some lamps are still under halogen as some indoor spot.

Halogen lamps consume more electricity for the heat than the light they provide therefore, comes back to some place of the IUT a higher consumption, a halogen bulb that would light 20 hours a day for 365 days could consume 1,460 kWh, for an order of idea, let's say that the IUT has 500 bulbs, half of them are still under halogen lights therefore 250 bulb, this will represent 365,000 kWh so 2,190,000 gCO2e / kWh per year, compare to the LED lamps that they will consume in the IUT (For 250 bulbs) 10 950 kWh therefore approximately 66 gCO2e / kWh

Some devices in the U.I.T needs a lot of power like the U.I.T intranet, moreover if there is in the building an intranet, there is necessarily a server, a server can consume 75 kWh / year depending on the equipment, etc ... Since the PCs are on networks, therefore the systems operation are on network, it must have many hard disk (HDD) to the personal space of students, for a lack of information on which model they use, we will be based on NetApp E2700 storage array, it estimates the consumption of a 1,024W bay with 60 HDDs, this will be 1374W and in kWh that represents 12,036.24 kWh for 24-hour use. If the array system contains a backup system, consumption would logically be multiplied by 2

In addition, we can consider that the printer is one of the most consuming devices because he must photocopy many copies for many promotions and many students, we can estimate it at 22W / photocopy for a jet printer category ink but for a more professional use, it will be more of a laser printer of economic type would be in the 300W / photocopy, that could represent 9,900Wh (If we count 3 more copies in case some students in the class weren't there or lost their leaves, on 5 courses this represents 49 500Wh and for 5 days this represents 247 500Wh therefore an emission of 1,482 gCO2e / kWh

All the suggestions to reduce the overall impact.

To reduce the overall impact of the IUT, we have thought of several measures:

  • In relation to the computers of the IUT:
    • Students should be advised to turn off computers rather than just close their sessions, if the computer stays on the login page for more than 10 minutes the pc could turn off by itself.
    • Define a time at which all the IUT's PCs turn off if they are not being used or if they are on the login page. For example thanks to the "Wake On Lan" technology
    • Take the digital version of the document using a laptop PC or using the video projectors to reduce the impact on paper and the energy they can eat.
  • For coffee machines or dispensers, when they are not working, it would be possible to unplug them because they are unusable and often remain (especially for the coffee machine in the lobby of building A plugged in but not usable).
  • Establish Home Automation:
    • In order to reduce the consumption of electricity by the numerous lamps of the IUT, the installation of motion detectors in the rooms which would be launched 5 minutes after the lights in the room have been turned on and that would look to see if there is movement in the room, if it does not find any in the 5 minutes after activating the detector, the lights would turn off by itself, if any movement is found, the detector turns off, and restart the timer . It's a bit hard to understand so here's a graphic representation of this (it's in French)
Un schéma servent a la logique des appareillages domotique
here is a flowchart of this concept, the beginning indicates the switching on of the light: This can be designed using a low consumption Arduino, a Raspberry or a timing relay on closing, a switchgear from LeGrand (A reliable brand in switchgear) can do the job but will be more suitable for a hallway.
    • It would be possible to fluctuates the intensity of the lamps depending on the amount of natural light entering in the room, why turn on the lamps when it's not necessary This can save a few more Wh and therefore make the U.I.T have a smaller impact on the environment. Thanks to photoresistors (light sensors) we could pass more current or not in the bulbs

It would also be possible to replace the U.I.T lamps with low consumption lamps. in order to use less electricity. The installation of solar panels on the various roofs of the IUT would make it possible to make this unused space profitable while reducing the environmental impact of the establishment.

Other establishments that are committed to reducing their environmental impact.

Uşak Kanyon College

Usak Kanyon University in Turkey has Usak to look for ways to reduce the energy consumption of the establishment

They seek to reduce the school's energy consumption by 20% despite a increase in the number of students.

The idea found to reduce the environmental cost of the establishment is to replace the paper towels by hand dryers. Hand dryers have been particularly chosen so that their energy cost is as low as possible. They therefore turned to Green Apple XLERATOR energy efficient hand dryers from Excel Dryer. Through compared to traditional hand dryers they have reduced energy consumption in average of 80%, and a carbon footprint of 50 to 75%. In addition, unlike paper towels there is no waste and everything is recyclable.

ESCP School of Commerce

ESCP Business School is known for its actions in the field of development sustainable.

Initially the school has many teachers active in the research of field of ecology.

The school ensures that all students are aware of development issues sustainable and realizes the limit of resources available on Earth.

Seek to move to a circular economy (producing goods and services that reduce the consumption and waste of raw materials, the production of waste and the use of non-renewable energy)

The Pablo Picasso eco college in Montfermeil

The Pablo Picasso college seeks to reduce the consumption of waste in its establishment:

  • Creation of a collection pole for ink cartridge battery and cap present in the hall for greater visibility (in April 2021 45 kg of batteries were recovered).
  • Poster layout intended to raise awareness among students present in the whole college.
  • Distribution of a gourd to each student to reduce plastic consumption because of the water bottles.
  • Development of a vegetable garden that uses bio-waste as a nutrient for food.
